Minutes for PARA Meeting

March 14, 2023

Club President KD4GCY-Garry presided and called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the US Flag.

Club Treasurer, KC4WPS- Roger read the Minutes of the February 13, 2023 meeting to the membership. KC4DR – Don made a motion to accept the minutes and KC4WPS- Roger seconded the motion.  The minutes were voted on and accepted as read.

Club Treasurer KC4WPS- Roger read the financial report to the membership.  He noted the purchase of two new CDs.  KC4DR-Don made a motion to approve the report as read. The motion was voted on and carried. 

President Garry led the membership in discussion on the following topics:

Club Scribe: We need a person to take over the duties of Club Scribe in the absence of KN4TIP- Michael.

70th Anniversary of PARA:  KB9BVL-Jeff led a discussion on how we can celebrate with a special event station. KB9BVL-Jeff made a motion that we operate a special event station to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the club.  The motion was seconded by W9ADN-Aidan. The motion was voted on and carried.

Echolink:  The status and possible solutions to the ongoing Echolink problems were discussed.

New Fulton County repeater:  145.270 – 100.0

KN4TIP- Michael texted an update on the “PTT Technicians’” program up-coming to encourage 9-12 year olds and their families involved in amateur radio. He need instructors for at least the first two classes. Here are the particulars: We have scheduled 4 successive Saturdays from 3-6 pm: March 18, March 25, April 1, and April 8 for Amateur Radio classes for kids. We have reserved the church basement dining room at Gospel Assembly Church, 2100 Ohio St (belt line) for those dates and times.  Please contact Michael via 2m or call 270-217-2315 , mdurr@comcast.net to participate.

Minutes for PARA Meeting

February 13, 2023

Club President KD4GCY-Garry presided and called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the US Flag.

Club President KD4GCY-Garry turned the meeting over to KN4TIP- Michael since he was under a time constraint.  He presented an update on the “PTT Technicians’” program up-coming to encourage 9-12 year olds and their families involved in amateur radio.  The date for the orientation program is February 18, 2023 at 5:00 pm at Gospel Assembly Church Dining room (downstairs) located at 2100 Ohio (21st and Beltline) in Paducah, Ky.  We will have KM4LDP- Jeff’s go box and setup, KN4TIP- Michaels 2m/Fusion setup, and Aiden – W9ADN with a CW demonstration.  Over 30 agencies and individuals have been contacted to provide participants. The registrants will be limited to the first 50 children registered.  Please contact Michael via 2m or call 270-217-2315 , mdurr@comcast.net to participate.

Club President KD4GCY-Garry read the Minutes of the January 9, 2023 meeting to the membership. Club President KD4GCY-Garry made note that the weather net occurred on January 2, 2023. The minutes were accepted as read with the exception of the date of the weather net.

Club Treasurer KC4WPS- Roger read the financial report to the membership.  KC4DR-Don made a motion to approve the report as read. W4WKN-Dave seconded the motion.  The motion was voted on and carried. 

KC4WPS- Roger continued with discussion of our CD’s that are currently earning a very low interest rate. A motion was made by KC4WPS-Roger to cash out both CDs, pay the 3 month penalty, take $1000 from checking and reinvest half of the proceeds ($2000) in a one year CD and the other half ($2000) in an 18 month CD at Edward Jones Investments.  The motion was voted on and carried.

President Garry led the membership in discussion on the following topics:

Echolink – the status and possible solutions to the ongoing Echolink problems was discussed.

McCracken County EMA is having a Tech Class February 23, March 2, March 9, and testing on March 16, 2023.

NWS Paducah will be hosting a severe weather workshop March 1, 2023, 9 am to noon, at MSU building, 4430 Sunset Ave.  Registration is required.

Minutes for PARA Meeting

January 9, 2023

Club President KD4GCY-Garry presided and called the meeting to order at 7:04 p.m. and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the US Flag.

There were 18 members at the meeting. 

Club Scribe KN4TIP- Michael read the Minutes of the November 14, 2022 meeting to the membership.  KB9BVL–Jeff made a motion to amend the minutes and KC4ENA- Freddie seconded the motion. A motion to accept the amended minutes made by KC4WPS- Roger and seconded by K4HNJ- Don. The motion was voted on and carried.

Club Treasurer KC4WPS- Roger read the financial report with corrections to the membership.  KG4SRK- Dennis made a motion to approve the report as read. KC4ENA- Freddie seconded the motion.  The motion was voted on and carried.  KC4WPS- Roger continued with discussion of our club liability insurance through ARRL for a $200/annual payment.  KN4TIP- Michael made the motion to approve the payment and was seconded by KB9BVL- Jeff.  The motion was voted unanimously approved.  KC4WPS- Roger continued with discussion of our CD’s that our currently earning a very low interest rate but are not at maturity.  We discussed surrendering them at a 90 day penalty and converting them to the present higher rate. KD4GCY- Garry reminded us that the club money was earned mostly by some of our senior members that were not present to discuss topic.  A motion was made by KN4TIP-Michael to table the discussion until next meeting to allow those senior members to be present, the motion was seconded by KG4KXN-Scott. The motion was voted on and carried.

KD4GCY-Garry presented a slate of officers for this year. Opportunity to nominate other officers was made.  No changes were made, so the slate remained as:

A motion was made by WD4OKO- Neal to approve the slate as stated and KC4ENA- Freddie seconded the motion. The motion was voted unanimously approved.

President Garry led the membership in discussion on the following topics:

  • Prayer requests for KM4LDP-Jeff and family whose mother Anna Marie Estes Heavrin passed Jan 7, 2023 at age 88.  The funeral is January 10, 2023 at 1:00 pm at the Lone Oak Chapel of Milner and Orr Funeral Home.  The club made a $35 donation to St. Judes Childrens’ Hospital on her behalf.
  • An Emergency Weather net was initiated by KD4GCY- Garry at 2110 on January 2, 2023 continuing until 2325 due to regional severe weather and tornado warnings.  Thankfully there was no severe damage or loss of life reported.  There were 17 check-ins during the emergency.
  • KD4GCY-Garry informed us of the National Weather Service Ambassador program.  “The Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador™ initiative is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) effort to formally recognize NOAA partners who are improving the nation’s readiness, responsiveness, and overall resilience against extreme weather, water, and climate events. As a WRN Ambassador, partners commit to working with NOAA and other Ambassadors to strengthen national resilience against extreme weather. In effect, the WRN Ambassador initiative helps unify the efforts across government, non-profits, academia, and private industry toward making the nation more ready, responsive, and resilient against extreme environmental hazards. Weather-Ready Nation (WRN) is a strategic outcome where society’s response should be equal to the risk from all extreme weather, water, and climate hazards.” https://www.weather.gov/wrn/ambassadors

NOVEMBER MEETING MINUTES

Minutes for PARA Meeting of November 14, 2022

Club President KDGCY-Garry, presided and called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the US Flag.  Garry reminded us of the special significance of the pledge on this Veteran’s Day weekend.

We had fourteen members present, and also K4HNJ-Don (Donald Lindsey) who recently moved here from Florida, and Duane Rose, a Paducah resident who is currently studying for a Technician license.  We introduced ourselves around the room to our guests.

Club Scribe Michael, KN4TIP, read the Minutes of the October 10, 2022 meeting to the membership. ND4X-Paul made a motion to approve the Minutes as read and W4WKN-Dave seconded the motion.  The motion was voted on and carried.

Club Treasurer Roger, KC4WPS, read the financial report to the membership.  He reported there are 42 paid members.  KG4SRK-Dennis made a motion to approve the Report as read . KC4WPS-Roger 2nd the motion.  The motion was voted on and carried.

President Garry led the membership in discussion on the following topics:

  • Prayer requests by KN4TIP-Michael for his right hip being evaluated for circulations issues.
  • Chris Noles provided a phone number for ease in contacting the National Weather Service with either text or pictures of adverse weather. The number is 270-681-2694 and is monitored in the NWS Paducah location. 
  • ND4X-Paul reported our information on the W4NJA website to access the Packet Dx clusters.  This information is valuable when activating or hunting POTA (Parks On The Air) contacts.
    A search of https://pota.app/#/  will open the POTA contact website.  The website automatically records “hunters” contacts when the “activators” upload the contact information.  Awards are given for a variety of accomplishments. 
  • KN4TIP- Michael inquired of the progress of the committee to review and edit the “Net Control Procedures”.  KD4GCY- Garry requested same to transcribe his interpretation of the current procedures to be utilized.
  • KN4TIP-Michael is spearheading a program to enlist parents and their 9-12 year old children to become involved in Amateur Radio.  Commitment from the club was given to provide entry level radios to the children when they become licensed.  Further actions are tabled for further discussion
  • Skywarn Recognition Day occurs the first Saturday of December each year. Amateur Operators have been invited to operate from the NWS between the hours of 6pm Friday, Dec. 2 to 6pm Sat, Dec 3.  Contacts from amateur operators wishing to work multiple NWS stations will receive a variety of certificates. Please contact the office to be added to the list. 
  • The Southernmost Illinois Emergency Radio Association (SIERA) meetings will be held on 3rd Wed 5:30pm at 605 Metropolis St.
  • Up-coming events:  ARES meets Nov. 17, 2022 at the McCracken County EOC on Coleman Rd at 7:00 pm local time. A meeting of the NWS supervisors will meet at the same time in Grand Rivers.  Trent Okerson of WPSD weather is presenting a program on the Mayfield tornado occurring December 2021 at the McCracken Public Library.  There is a Remembrance Walk scheduled in Mayfield also for the tornado. 
  • The January 9, 2023 meeting will be presided over by KC4DR-Don at the request of KD4GCY- Garry who will be absent.

KY4LDS- Frank demonstrated a 3rd compressed air cannon device used to launch antenna pull lines.  He said this one is the most accurate of the launch systems he has acquired.

OCTOBER MEETING MINUTES

Minutes for PARA Meeting of October 10, 2022

Club President Garry, KD4GCY presided and called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the US Flag.

  • Prayer requests for KS4V-Bruce who is still recovering from extended COVID symptoms, KN4TIP – Michael who is suffering from Psoriatric Arthritis and is waiting medication approval, his wife Marianna Durr with Lupus, KM4LDP-Jeff who is to have the “Watchman” heart filter to prevent blood clots, and W4KU-Wallace Shankle III who has had a recent illness  he is still in recovery.
  • “Seniors Learning For Fun” program Sept. 22 was attended by 51 seniors. A former ham operator, Cathy Hunt talked about renewing her license.  Several seniors came out to see live demonstrations on radio by KM4LDP- Jeff and KN4TIP-  Michael.
  • Skywarn Recognition Day occurs the first Saturday of December each year. Amateur Operators have been invited to operate from the NWS between the hours of 6pm Friday, Dec. 2 to 6pm Sat, Dec 3.  Contacts from amateur operators wishing to work multiple NWS stations will receive a variety of certificates.
  • Aiden Carnes reports a new club is forming in Metropolis to be known as Southernmost Illinois Emergency Radio Association (SIERA) Meetings will be held on 3rd Wed 5:30pm at 605 Metropolis St. They are seeking ARRL affiliation and insurance.
  • KN4TIP- Michael presented the plan of getting 9-12 yo involved in amateur radio.  He will be contacting parents of children in home school CoOps to develop interest in supporting their children in becoming active operators. It was suggested to get the interest in not only 2m operation but the 10m section, and CW available to technicians. The goal is to get the children licensed by January 2023. 
  • Up-coming events:  Fort Massac Encampment Oct 15-16, 2022, Big -Brown Truck Pull- October 15, 2022,   Multiple Fall Festival Celebrations, Great American ShakeOut Oct. 20, 10:20 am., North American SSB Sprint-Oct 22, 0000z-0359z.

Show and Tell: 

KD4GCY- Garry showed an old emergency beacon device with tubes.  He also shared an AM/FM 4 diode kit with W9ADN to build.

KY4LDS- Frank shared two systems for launching a line for antenna into a tree- one arborist slingshot device and the other a compressed air cannon device used by electric tower workers.  Both will launch much higher than a hand thrown device.

SEPTEMBER MEETING MINUTES

Meeting of Sept, 12, 2022

Club President Garry, KD4GCY presided and called the meeting to order at 1902 and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the US Flag.

There were 19 attendees at the meeting.  There were two guest speakers, KJ4CRV-Chris Noles, NWS Lead Forecaster and Kim Clark, 911 Dispatcher- Communications were introduced to the membership.

The business portion of the meeting was delayed allowing our speakers to go first:

Chris Noles started by opening for questions following our ARES meeting presentation. They are moving forward to ensure a strong presence in Amateur Radio.

Kim Clark, ENP presented a power point presentation. She amassed a great deal of experience through different communications and administrative positions. She is certified as an ENP- Emergency Number Professional and a CMCP – Communication Manager Certification Program.  She is the current manager of the Paducah Central Dispatch.  Dispatch has acquired cutting edge technology to locate individuals via cell phone for rapid deployment.  Unfortunately, dispatch is still limited to an outdated Motorola console running on XP software outdated in 2014.  There are currently 5 telecommunicator  positions open. 

Club president KD4GCY-Garry opened the business meeting with the following topics

  • September 22, 2022 2:00 pm “Seniors Learning For Fun” program at WKCTC conference room.  Several operators are committed to have radio equipment available for GOTA.
  • ARRL membership application may submitted to Roger Good-Treasurer during the months of September and October so he can send to ARRL as a batch to limit paperwork
  • A reminder that the December meeting will be cancelled in lieu of the December 12, 2022 dinner meeting at Casa Mexicana 4793 Village Square Dr #1, Paducah, Kentucky
  • KB9BVL- Jeff has acquired three inexpensive handhelds. There was discussion to sell to any club members for $20 each.

A motion was made by KC4WPS­- Roger to make the radios available to new hams if needed that don’t have a radio.  The motion was amended to make KB9BVL- Jeff solely responsible for distributing the equipment as determined by need. The motion as amended was seconded by KM4LDP- Jeff.  The motion carried.

  • Upcoming “Senior Learning For Fun” program on Ham Radio Thursday September 22, 2022 from 2-3pm – We will have a short PowerPoint program and then invite the seniors out to the patio area where we will have multiple radios setup including- a “GoBox”, Digital Mode, SSB and 2m rigs for the seniors to have a GOTA exercise.
  • KG4VKB-Logan will set up a meeting with Dr. Vanhoose to discuss the club taking over the EchoLink node.  KM4LDP -Jeff has offered to allow us to set it up at his location for easy access to the equipment.

JULY MEETING MINUTES

Minutes for PARA Meeting of July 11, 2022

Club President Garry, KD4GCY presided and called the meeting to order at 7:06 p.m. and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the US Flag.

Club Scribe Michael, KN4TIP, read the Minutes of the June 13, 2022 meeting to the membership. A date was corrected in the minutes from last month.  W4WKN- Dave made a motion to approve the Minutes as amended and KM4LDP-Jeff seconded the motion.  The motion was voted on and carried.

Club Treasurer Roger, KC4WPS, read the financial report to the membership.  KM4LDP-Jeff made a motion to approve the report as read it was seconded by KG4SRK-Dennis.  The motion was voted on and carried.

There were 20 attending the meeting.  There were four guests, KJ7CPQ- Al Lake, N4NGA- Charles Spradlin, K4LJS-Karen Spradlin, and Todd Young-KO4RKC who were introduced to the membership. Charles and Karen Spradlin were attending a CDL Truck Driving School in Paducah and made contact via the repeater listed on the interstate sign coming into town.  KD4GCY-Garry made the QSO and invited them to our meeting.

President Garry led the membership in discussion on the following topics:

  • Steve Morgan- W4NHO, the state Section Manager resigned effective July 8, 2022
  • KY QSO – ND4X-Paul gave report on the recent QSO party stats. 
  • Paul also gave a report on the LoTW logbook
  • KD4GCY-Garry proposed that the Lighthouse at Grand Rivers may qualify for Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society.  We will research to see if it is included in the ARLHS World List of Lights (WLOL) and if not make application and seek to activate it.
  • Continued discussion of the purchase of the EchoLink system, improving access to the equipment, and whether it will need to be reassigned to a different call sign. We are aware that the computer will need to be replaced and other components upgraded as needed.
  • The educational program for the Seniors group is set for the fall.  We will have several stations set up for the seniors to “Get On The Air” and demonstrate some of our capabilities.  KM4LDP-Jeff will bring his “GoBox”, KN4TIP- Michael will have a 2 meter radio with SignaLink for use by the seniors. A third unit demonstrating digital modes is planned.
  • Neil reported increased activity within EM involved in amateur radio.  Emergency Management is looking to cross-train individuals from other disciplines including amateur radio operators.

KC4WPS- Roger gave a training on installation of RJ45 connectors to Cat5-E cable with demonstration of the tool to verify the connection and sequence of the cable connection.

  •  Motion made by KN4TIP-Michael for $450 petty cash for use on field day, KM4LDP-Jeff 2nd the motion and it was carried without dissent
  • June 25-26. 2022 Field Day  Assignments were made for radios, generators, coolers, food, cables, etc
  • EchoLink was discussed by group as to whether we should approach Dr. VanHoose to purchase the unit to give us better access.  Logan has discussed it briefly with him and he will consider relinquishing it.  He mentioned the computer is old and will need to be replaced.  Logan  will make a formal request of Dr. Vanhoose to see how he feels and the cost of procuring and installing it
  • New tech pool questions go into effect on July 1, 2022
  • Next meeting July 11, 2022 at WKCTCS
  • WD4OKO- Neil discussed testing of the 147 .06 repeater and reconfiguring the antennas on the tower to give us a 60′ higher receive antenna.  Initial reports are favorable to the test.
  • Net Control Operator assignments were made and the formal portion of the meeting was adjourned at 9:05pm
